CATHERINE BURROUGHS has just published an article, "The Persistence of Closet Drama: Theory, History, Form," in the five-part series from Palgrave Macmillan called Redefining British Theatre History. The volume in which her essay appears is titled The Performing Society: Britain in the Nineteenth Century, and it is edited by Peter Holland and Tracy C. Davis.
BEATRICE FARNSWORTH was invited by a peer-reviewed journal, The Russian Review, to evaluate a manuscript for possible publication.
WILLIAM GANIS had his essay "Hyperbolic: Keith Brown" published in a catalog accompanying the "Keith Brown: Multiple Dimensions" exhibition of new media artwork at the Chinese European Art Centre at Xiamen University. On October 13 Professor Ganis traveled with his WLLS 101 class to the Ganondagan State Historic Site. On October 27, this same class toured the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art where they visited with the museum's Director, Frank Robinson, and received a behind-the-scenes tour of the Asian art and prints collections.
SIOUXSIE GRADY won an "Excellence in Directing" award from the Theatre Association of New York State for the Fall Production of "Twelfth Night." This is the fifth year in a row that Professor Grady has received this award. Joe DeForest won "Excellence in Set Design and Execution," Lindsey Cahoon '09 and Julian Trutman '10 won "Excellence in Acting," and the full cast of "Twelfth Night" won "Excellence in Ensemble Acting." Professor Grady also recently acted in and directed a staged reading of the play, "Gargoyles," with the Icarus Theatre Ensemble at the Community School of Music and Arts on November 5.
LISA KAHALEOLE HALL has been given a courtesy appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor in the American Indian Studies Program at Cornell for 2007-2010. An excerpt from her forthcoming anthology essay "Navigating Our Own 'Sea of Islands:' Conceptualizing a Space for Native Hawaiian Feminism" will appear in American Quarterly, the journal of the national American Studies Association this spring.
THEODORE LOSSOWSKI has a one-man show of his abstract multi-media sculptures at the Renaissance Art Gallery in Rochester, New York, which runs from October 26 to November 23.
WILLIAM ROBERTS has an exhibition of his Exxon Valdez paintings," Valdez Redux," in Stratton for the dedication of the new Wells College science building. Two of his drawings were auctioned at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore by the Maryland Racing Association. Professor Roberts’s painting, "Dichotomy of Darkness," was auctioned at the Museum of the Earth's T.Rex Alive 75 benefit to help raise money for Climate Change education. He photographed the Genesee Valley Hunt Cup Races for Steeplechase Times on October 13, 2007. On October 20, he photographed the Breeders' Cup Grand National at Far Hills, New Jersey. His photo of the horse, McDynamo, winning the event for the fifth year in a row was published by Steeplechase Times and used as the cover photo for their website. McDynamo's win was historic as no other horse in the history of steeplechase racing in the United States has won the race more than twice.
ANDRÉ SIAMUNDELE presented a paper on "Patrice Emery Lumumba: History, Drama and Cinema" at The Annual Conference of Film and Literature Association, Lawrence, Kansas, on October 13. His article, "Francophone Africa Theater," has been published in the 2nd edition of The New Encyclopedia of Africa (Ed. John Middleton), published by Thomson-Gale.
CINDY SPEAKER's manuscript was accepted for publication in Exploring the Evidence: Reporting Research on First-Year Seminars Volume IV. The series is published by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina.
CRAWFORD THOBURN conducted and performed with a specially constituted student-singing ensemble, "The Tudor Singers," in singing a group of Elizabethan part-songs and madrigals before three performances of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" on October 19-21 in Phipps Auditorium. The ensemble repeated the performance at the Bach's Lunch on October 25. Three student choral ensembles performed under his direction for Family and Friends Weekend on October 20 in Barler Recital Hall, accompanied by pianist Russell Posegate. This was the first performance of the College's new men's ensemble, and also of the newly constituted coeducational Concert Choir. Soprano Mary Gooding was the soloist with the latter group.
CHRISTINA WAHL attended the annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society in San Francisco during September. She co-authored a chapter titled "Vision in Larval Fish" with Ellis Loew. SUSAN WANSOR, SUSAN TALBOT, and Laurie Rocker attended the New York State FIPSE (Fund for Improvement of Post Secondary Education) Teacher Assessment Conference in Syracuse on October 4-5. Professor Wansor attended the New York State Reading Association Conference in Saratoga November 8-9.
