Express Tennis Capture First NCAA Bid in School History

The Wells College women's tennis team captured the first ever NCAA tournament bid in Wells College athletic history.  The Express entered the NEAC tournament as the four seed this past Friday at Clarks Summit, PA and captured the automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.  Wells upset the #1 seed, Keuka College in the semifinals of the NEAC team championship on Friday.  Wells swept through the double contests 3-0, followed by Paula Goodnough and Kat Koziura securing the 5-2 team victory with singles wins.  Wells then battled #2 seed Penn State Berks for the championship but fell 5-3, and finished in 2nd.  Kat Koziura, Cat Abrego and Ali Nolan posted singles wins for Wells in the loss.  Penn State Berks is a provisional member of the NCAA, and as a result, Wells receives an automatic bid to participate in the NCAA Division III tournament held May 2-4 of 2008.

The tennis team continued their success on Saturday as 8 of the 9 flights qualified for the individual championships.  The team met their goal by placing in the top 3 in every position, and 2 flights came away with NEAC Championship wins.  Sixth singles player Sharm Nuli and the second doubles team of Cat Abrego and Paula Goodnough won their respective tournaments.

During the weekend, Ana Riley reset the most singles wins in a season record for Wells by finishing with a total of 12.  Ali Nolan was right behind with 11 singles wins.  Three Wells players at least tied the most doubles wins, an in season record, with Cat Abrego coming away as the new record holder with 12.

The women’s tennis season team finished the regular season 10-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
