Campus Diversity Committees
    Spring/Summer 2008

Background on Diversity Committees at Wells College

There are currently four diversity committees at Wells College: Student Diversity Committee, Staff Diversity Committee, Faculty Diversity Committee, and President’s Diversity Committee. These committees originally served as ad hoc groups working independently and collaboratively on issues affecting diversity at Wells. The 2008-09 academic year will mark the beginning of a more formal role of the diversity committees in the governance structure of the college. The reasons for undertaking this change is fourfold:

  1. It provides a strategic, integrated and long-term approach for all campus constituencies.
  2. It provides a formal space for students, staff, and faculty to engage in institutional change.
  3. It provides transparency and responsibility to each of the committee’s constituencies and the campus community as a whole.
  4. It symbolizes Wells’ commitment to diversity, inclusion, interculturalism, and globalism.
This new structure means fundamental changes in the make-up and tasks of the committees. For example, the student committee is an official committee of Collegiate Cabinet (Wells’ student government) with their members elected by students. The Staff Diversity Committee has joined Staff Forum, the representational body for staff at Wells. The Faculty Diversity Committee has been working on a proposal that allows it to become a regular, standing committee of the faculty. It is anticipated that the notice of motion and proposal will be presented to faculty during fall term 2008. The President’s Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, Interculturalism, and Globalism is now composed of all major adminstrative head and diversity committee representatives. The task of this specific committee is to develop a campus-wide strategic, action, and assessment plan.
