Wells Dialup
Featured Link:  • NETWORK ADVISORY •
Dial-up accounts are currently available for Wells College staff and faculty - not to students. To inquire about getting a dial-up account, contact Ken Larson at 3305. Dial-in access is NOT automatically assigned to new staff and faculty members -  it must be formally requested.

The self-help instructions below are for win 95/98.  There are several editions of Windows that may not match the instructions below exactly, however there will be SOMEWHERE to put in equivalent settings.   Dial-in accounts may have a suffix attached to your WELLS username such as "-ppp".  The dial-in password will be the same as your email account. Dial-in accounts are only in effect for the duration of employment or for retired employees with emeriti status.

Keep in mind, we are not a commercial provider so speeds may be lower than you might expect from a commercial provider and you may experience busy signals during evening hours.

Client Setup (If we do it)
You can either follow the instructions below to configure your computer yourself, or you can set up a time to bring in the CPU so we can configure it for you.  If you decide to bring in your PC, please call ahead.  Otherwise there could be a substantial delay before we get to your PC. If you decide to bring a system in, have your operating system CD in addition to your CPU.  If you want to use a laptop, be sure to bring your AC adapter.  If you have an external modem for either system, bring that too.  You do NOT need to bring a mouse, keyboard, monitor or telephone wire.

Client Setup (If you do it)
Win95/98 instructions:  (Other OS systems will use similar settings)
For Windows 98 and most Windows 95 computers, following the instructions "To configure your connection" should be all you need to get connected. Note that due to the different versions of these operating systems, some of the instructions here may not entirely match what you see on your screen but should be close enough to allow extrapolation. Users installing new modems and users of computers running some versions of Windows 95 will need to follow the instructions further below. Users of other operating systems will also need to extrapolate from the information here to their specific configuration options.

To configure your connection (Win95 or Win98):
Go to My Computer
Double click on Dial-Up Networking folder
Click on Make New Connection
Name this connection (e.g. Out of Area Code Connection, Local Connection, Campus Connection, etc.)In most cases you can leave "Select a modem" set to Standard Modem. If you have a problem, choose the appropriate modem you have set up under Control Panel - Modems.
 Click on Next
For some computers, you will need to insert the Windows software CD at this point.
Click on Finish
Type in Area code (315) and phone number you will be dialing into (364-3450) To change, go to Dial-up Networking - File - Property.
Click on Next
Click on Finish
Now go to Local Connection (or whatever you named your connection)
Right click on it
Click on Properties
Click on Server Types tab
Be sure it is set for PPP: Internet, Win NT Server, Windows 98
There should only be check marks in Log onto Network and Enable Software Compression
Remove check marks in front of NetBIOS and IPX/SPX Compatable
Click on TCP/IP Settings button
Leave IP address empty
Click on Specify name server addresses button and fill in Primary DNS with: "10.3.11.8" and add another DNS server "10.3.11.9".   Ignore all the other questions, and leave all defaults.
Click on OK
Setup is now complete; you are ready to dial in.
To dial-in:
Double-click on Local Connection (or whatever you named it). For dialing in and only for dialing in, fill in your User Name with your regular user ID plus -ppp (e.g. jdoe-ppp)
Fill in your password (can click on check box to save password)
Click on Connect
If/when prompted for Network password, press <Esc>
To disconnect:
Once you are connected, a small icon showing two connected terminals will appear in the status area of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. To disconnect, click on that icon or double click on your connection again to bring up the Connection window, then click on Disconnect.

To install drivers for new modems:
For Laptop (PCCard [PCM/CIA]) and External Modem Users: If you are installing a new modem, turn off the computer, then connect and turn on the modem before restarting; the modem will need to be available for automatic configuration to work.

PC and Internal Modem Users: If an internal modem has been installed, make sure the cables leading to the telephone jack have been properly hooked up. You will need a dial tone in order to use the automatic configuration.

If Windows95/98 does not detect your new modem upon restarting:
Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel
Double click on Modems
Click on Add
Follow instructions to let Win95 automatically detect your modem
To install Dial-up Networking (if it is not already installed by default):
Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add / Remove Programs
Click on Windows Setup tab
Double click on Communications
Make sure the Dial-up Networking box is checked (It is OK to leave others checked as well)
Click on OK
Click on OK again. This will copy necessary software if it is not already installed. It may ask you for your Windows95 disk.
If requested, click on OK for Restart

To install the TCP/IP protocol (if it is not already installed by default):
Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network
Click on Configuration tab
Click on Dial-up Adapter
Click on Add
Click on Protocol
Click on Add
Click on Microsoft
Click on TCP/IP
Click on OK
Click on OK to exit
If asked to restart your computer, click on Yes
