Anti-Virus
/ Anti-Spam measures
When we found that close
to 70% of all email was being classified by users as junk email or Mal-ware,
we needed to take measures to automatically filter email messages reaching
our campus. Below, are the steps we have taken..
BlackHole Lists
Our first filter is called
a blackhole list. This is a list of Internet addresses that have
been used in the past for bulk emailings (spammings) in the past.
If you send a message to Wells, and get a message back saying your message
was blocked because your site was blacklisted, here is what to do.
| If blocked by... |
Then visit website... |
| sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org |
http://www.spamhaus.org |
| bl.csma.biz |
http://bl.csma.biz |
| relays.ordb.org |
http://ordb.org |
| Follow (or pass
along to your email provider) the procedures to take your email provider
off the blacklist. Chances are, if Wells is blocking mail, many other sites
are (or soon will be) blocking mail from your email provider too! |
Virus Scanning
If our server detects a
virus in a message, it blocks the message, then discards it. Before
sending an email message, be sure to run an anti-virus scan on YOUR machine
to make sure you aren't unknowingly sending messages with a virus payload
in them. Also, some files such as MS-Word documents with macros in
them or some MS-Access files may be stopped by the virus scanner.
Consider sending these type of files by some other means other than email.
Message size limits
Due to our email server
having only a finite amount of room on it, and mailboxes being rather small,
we have message size limits. So please keep files small and use utilities
such as PKZIP to reduce the size of files. Any email that has a size
of more than 4 megs will be rejected. If you have files larger than
this, please send using some other method rather than trying to send these
files as an attachment. For Bulk-Bit media delivery, the U.S. postal
service does a fine job.
If you have other email problems,
feel free to call us by phone to let us know of your situation. We
may be able to solve the problem or at least offer advice.
