Alumnae
are a very important part of the admissions program at Wells College.
With the Board of Trustees recent decision to become a coeducational institution,
this is an exciting time to contribute to Wells’ future. You now have the
opportunity to refer bright young women AND bright young men who wish to
gain a quality liberal arts educatio n
and participate in Wells’ extensive experiential learning program.
This letter will provide you with a brief overview of Admissions’ goals
for 2005, a profile of the type of student Wells is looking for, and finally
other ways in which you can assist Admissions.
The
Admissions Goals. The goal for the incoming freshman class for
2005 is 130 new students, with an expected 5 to 25 men in the class.
The goal for transfer students is 45 new students with an expected 5 to
25 men in that group as well. To achieve these goals, the admissions
staff traveled extensively this fall, visiting high schools and attending
college fairs in 22 states, including travel in NY, NJ, DC, MD, CT, NH,
VT, ME, MA, CO, FL, WA, OR, IN, IL, OH, PA, WI, MN, AZ, NV, and NM.
As a result of these and many other recruitment initiatives, over 350 students
have come to campus for admissions visits. The current inquiry
pool consists of over 9,000 high school seniors; 250 of those students
have come from alumnae referrals.
What
type of student is Wells looking for? We have received a very
good response to our alumnae admissions referral program, but the question
that continues to surface is “What does the typical Wells students look
like?” The typical prospective student has around a 90% cumulative grade
point average in a college preparatory high school curriculum, and SAT
scores above 1100 or ACT scores above 24. It is important to note
that admissions does not apply cut-offs for grade point average or standardized
test scores to applicants; admissions looks for bright students who will
contribute to the academic and co-curricular experiences of the Wells community.
Each summer with our referral reminder, we will update you as to what the
new class at Wells looks like academically.
How
can I help? Our next step in growing the Admissions Assistance
Program at Wells is to develop an effective Alumnae Admissions Volunteer
structure. Wells College is pleased to announce the Alumnae Association
has invited Laura Arpei Kline ’95 to join the Association board as the
Alumnae Admissions Liaison. In her position, Laura will facilitate
communication between the Association Board and the Admissions Office,
as well as communicate information to alumnae regarding volunteer opportunities
that assist the college in achieving its enrollment goals. Over the
next few weeks, we will be recruiting alumnae to serve as Regional Coordinators
for Admissions (RCA) and Alumnae Admissions Volunteers.
-
The responsibilities
of the Regional Coordinators for Admissions include working closely with
the Alumnae Admissions Liaison and the Admissions Office, maintaining adequate
supplies of recruitment literature and general training information to
distribute to alumnae volunteers in surrounding region, and recruiting
new alumnae volunteers to assist in the admissions effort. The estimated
expected time contribution is 15-20 hours a year.
-
The responsibilities
of the Alumnae Admissions Volunteers include working closely with the Regional
Coordinators for Admissions to refer new students to the college, attending
local college fairs, interviewing prospective students, contacting applicants
and enrolled students, and hosting events for new students. The estimated
expected time contribution is 8-10 hours a year.
Our
goal is to have a core of Regional Coordinators for Admissions and Alumnae
Admissions Volunteers in place by March 2005. If you are interested
in supporting Wells’ admissions efforts at this important moment in the
college’s history, print and complete the form below and return it to the
Admissions Office. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate
to contact us. We look forward to working with you to develop a strong
Alumnae Admissions Volunteer program that supports a vibrant and sustainable
Wells College.
