Volunteering for Wells: Purposeful and Rewarding Service

The annual tradition of Alumnae Council was lively and well this fall.  Forty-five Wells women returned to campus on the weekend of October 13 to learn, work, and celebrate.  Representatives from the Alumnae Association Board, FARGO board, and the Alumnae Award Committee met for special sessions along with class and regional representatives.Janice Gavan '77 and Julie Paradise Graessel '81

This year’s theme was helping volunteers become effective ambassadors for the college.  The process involves sharing information, and participants heard presentations by President Lisa Marsh Ryerson and her team covering the full range of college activities including student life, academics, recruitment, and fundraising. The administrators had given a similar presentation to the Wells College Board of Trustees only days before, so the news was fresh and in-depth.

Director of Alumnae Relations, Pam Sheradin ’86 organized the weekend working collaboratively with Alumnae Association Vice President Kristine Swanson Munden ’90, who presented a welcome address at the opening session.  A unique volunteer training session was led by Trustees Tobie Tyler van der Vorm ’70, Janice Gavan ’77, Nancy Roetman Menzel ’77 and Patti Wenzel Callahan ’79 (president of the Alumnae Association).  Council participants also received a volunteer tool kit filled with information and ideas.

Susan Doty Riad '71 , Kaffie White McCullough '67, Pam Hoskyns Yanco '77During sessions, alumnae explored their roles in college life.  For example, FARGO board members, led by Heather Reynolds ’97, are working with students on planning Sophomore Smash activities, and members of the association board are revising the organization’s by-laws, which define the association’s relationship with Wells.

While a tremendous amount of work was done, Council weekend is always a time for celebration, renewing friendships, and mingling with the campus community.  Notable, on Saturday night, Pam Hoskyns Yanco ’77 led a jam session that showcased the musical talents of alumnae and students.

“All in all, it was a fabulous weekend,” reports Pam Sheradin.  “Alumnae received a lot of information they can take with them to share with other Wells Women.  Alumnae are essential to Wells’ success, and we want them to have accurate information and to always know there are many opportunities to strengthen the bonds they have with each other and with their alma mater.”
