Health care for students
is available at the Community Medical Center located at the Northwest corner
of the Wells campus. It is staffed by two physicians and a certified
Family Nurse Practitioner, with day and evening appointments available.
The Medical Center also has a provider on call 24 hours for emergencies
(brochures available for more information). In addition, the Aurora
Volunteer Fire Department has qualified Emergency Medical Technicians who
are on 24-hour call and who will transport a students by ambulance when
necessary to Cayuga Medical Center (Ithaca Hospital), or Auburn Memorial
Hospital, when excellent medical and surgical care is available.
Routine health care at the Community Medical Center is covered by your
student health insurance. However, this may not cover outside laboratory
tests, consultations, or surgery. Please consult the student health
plan brochure for specifics.
Professional counseling services
are available at the Community Medical Center. Students may see a
counselor up to six times per year at no cost.
When a student requires
extended psychiatric care (beyond six visits), the student and their family
and/or guardian are responsible for making appropriate arrangements.
It is the policy of the Community
Medical Center to review submitted Health Reports for compliance with NYSDOH,
Public Health Law 125, as it pertains to Post-Secondary Institutions (outline
within Immunization Handbook for Post-Secondary Institutions).
All students, regardless
of enrollment status (full or part-time) are mailed a Health Report in
their enrollment packet over the summer. The report includes a Health
History, an Authorization Form (consent to provide medical services to
anyone under 18 years old), home physician information, Immunization Record
(required and recommended), the Meningococcal Vaccine Information Sheet
(to be signed by parent or adult student) and a Physical Examination Form.
The Health Report is to be
completed by the parent (or guardian) for students under 18 years of age,
or adult student and their attending physician. The completed report
is returned to the Dean of Students Office; it is then forwarded to the
Community Medical Center.
Upon receipt of the Health
Report, a Community Medical Center nurse reviews the reports and immunization
record. The Health Report is filed with the students medical chart.
Procedure for Identified
Immunization Deficiency
The record in flagged (logged)
with the deficiency and a letter is mailed to the student. A time
frame (date) is indicated in the letter in which the student is to contact
the Medical Center. This will give the student sufficient time to
contact a parent and/or home physician to obtain necessary information/documentation.
If the student has not contacted
the Medical Center on or before the date indicated, formal notice will
be given to the Dean of Students for further action by the school.
The Dean of Students Office
will forward any documentation/contact information to or from the student
to the Medical Center.
Non-compliance by a student
will result in dismissal from the College - including all sports or other
campus activities and housing. NYS resident students must comply
with proof of immunization or exemption within 30 days, 45 days for out-of-state
or foreign resident students.
Wells College is obligated
to dismiss non-compliant students under state law. Proof of immunization
or exemption will be required for readmission to Wells College.
