"Bach and Before" concert at Wells

Elizabethan Conversation

An evening of baroque music played on period instruments will be presented at Wells College on Monday, November 6. The event will take place in the Barler Recital Hall beginning at 8:00 pm. The concert is free and the public is warmly invited to attend.

Elizabethan Conversation, comprised of consummate musicians Susan Sandman and Derwood Crocker, will play division flute music for recorder and lute. The Renaissance duet delivers a hauntingly beautiful evening of sound by combining scholarship in historical performance with instrumental skill and a love of period music.

Following the duet, Frogwork will play viol consort music by William Lawes and Christopher Simpson. Frogwork is Alexander Raykov, Susan Sandman, Lee R. Johnston, and Alexander Korolov. The quartet performs musical selections from the 17th century.

The evening will finish with a sonata by J. S. Bach performed by Alan Giambattista on harpsicord and Susan Sandman on alto recorder.

Stunning, unique Fall Dance Concert at Wells slated for November 10, 11

Dances with Friends

An eclectic, highly visual and lively choreographed dance program which combines the talents of musicians, visual artists and choreographers across the disciplines awaits you. On the evenings of Friday, November 10 and Saturday, November 11 in Phipps Auditorium on the Wells College campus in Aurora, the multi-faceted student dance concert "Dances With Friends" will premiere. The event, sponsored by the Wells College Arts and Performance Program, is open to the public. Tickets are $7 for the general public, $4 for students and seniors and $5 for the Wells Community. You may reserve tickets by calling the Wells College Box Office at 315-364-3456.

"The title of the concert ('Dances with Friends') reflects my desire to offer collaborative opportunities between musicians, visual artists and choreographers in my choreography," said Wells College dance professor Jeanne Goddard. "Neither the choreographic process nor the product--the dances themselves--would be the same without this sense of shared endeavor across the disciplines," Goddard concluded. Resident artist Tom Clark is the lighting designer.

The concert includes original choreography by guest artist Jean McGregor of Ithaca and by Goddard. Pianists Nancy and Kim Gilbertson of Moravia will perform the works of Respighi, Musgrave and Cheadle and visual artist Mary Reynolds of Ithaca will contribute scenic design. Guest artist Jean McGregor contributes her recent work, "Currents," created in response to Marilynne Robinson's novel, Housekeeping. The work will be complemented by an original score by Paul K. Fowler.

Goddard's "Nocturne" is a lyrical, romantic piece, created in the mood of Resphigi's music,"Notturno." An abstract work, "Nocturne" pays homage to the traditional nineteenth century "ballet blanc." It evokes a sense of the mysterious, dreamy tranquility at twilight.

The choreography for "Excursions" consists of a series of tiny, whimsical studies inspired by the titles of William Cheadle's "Picture Postcards" and Thea Musgrave's "Excursions." Titles for these musical vignettes include, "Fog on the Motor way," "Cathedrale," "Mosquito." All are written for piano four hands, and will be performed by Nancy Gilbertson and Kim Gilbertson. Within an ensemble of fourteen dancers, individuals will perform trios, quartets and large group sections.

Goddard will perform her 1995 solo, Spanish Songs, inspired by the late paintings of Pablo Picasso and the writings of Gertrude Stein about Picasso. Both these artists' works fragment the visual image and are meant as non-representational. The choreography draws on the colors, rhythms and textures generated by Stein and Picasso, with scenic elements developed by visual artists Mary Reynolds. For this piece Ms. Gilbertson will play three short Spanish dances by Manuel de Falla.

High voltage improv troupe stirs it up at Wells College

The Have Nots! improv troupe

Multitalented, high-energy improvisational comedy company The Have Nots! blow into Aurora on Monday night, November 13. The troupe will perform in the Sommer Student Center beginning at 8:00 pm. The show is free and the public won't want to miss this wacky, hysterical evening of entertainment.

Performances by The Have Nots! feature skits and games based on suggestions from the audience. The only "rule" with improv is that what the performers do and say on stage cannot be scripted or rehearsed before the performance. This leaves the ceiling on hilarity wide open as the audience matches wits with the performers.

With roots in South Carolina, The Have Nots!, comprised of founder and director Greg Tavares, Brandy Rucker, and Timmy Finch, recently celebrated their 100th performance together. The group plays the college circuit to rave reviews.

The Have Nots! offer well-choreographed, explosive comedy all in good taste and without foul language. For more information about the show, please call Jeanine Birchenough at 315-364-3330 or the Office of Communications at 315-364-3416.

Vivian Stromberg, executive director of MADRE, is Wells College's leader-in-residence

Vivian Stromberg Vivian Stromberg, Executive Director of MADRE, is this fall's Wells College Leader-In-Residence. Her visit to campus on Wednesday, November 15 will include two dynamic presentations that are both free and open to the public.

Stromberg's first talk, at 12 Noon in the Wells College Chapel, sponsored by the International Studies and Social Science Colloquium, will focus on "The United Nation's World Conference against Racism" Her second talk scheduled for 7:30 p.m. that evening in Cleveland Auditorium, will be "Human Rights in Action."

Since 1983, MADRE has worked in partnership with community-based women's organizations in conflict areas worldwide to address issues of women's health, economic development and other human rights. MADRE's sister organizations have utilized the support provided by MADRE to build clinics and community centers, literacy and leadership programs, and economic development and reproductive health projects in Nicaragua, Chiapas, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Guatemala, Haiti, Cuba, and Palestine.

Each semester Wells brings outstanding alumnae and other guests to campus who are leaders in their fields. They meet with students, present lectures, and receive recognition from the college for their accomplishments. Through the Leaders-in-Residence Program, Wells' students become part of a lifelong network of women who are known leaders throughout the world.

When it comes to campus organizations, Wells has a unique advantage because of the opportunities for participation and leadership available to students. Wells has a diverse array of student organizations, and most students participate in extracurricular activities. Because of the relatively small size of the student body, every student who is motivated can take a leadership role in a campus organization. At Wells, even as a first-year student, you can obtain an upper-level position in student government, serve as an editor on a student publication, have a top role in a theatre/dance event or play on an athletic team

For more information about Stromberg's visit or the Leaders-In-Residence program, please contact Nancy B. Karpinski, Director of Internships and Career Services at 315-364-3225 or the Office of Communications at 315-364-3416.
