Octogenarian poet reads at Wells

Stone is a highly acclaimed poet whose talents have been compared to Yeats. The octogenarian poet addresses issues such as politics, sex, science and art. The mood of her work ranges from the dark and depressing to uplifting and funny without prejudice.

Stone tries to challenge the ideas of "otherness" by exploring human as well as inanimate objects, bringing life equally into both arenas. Willis Barnstone once said of Stone, "Let's not worry why at eighty she isn't immediately known as our living Eliot, Stevens, or Bishop. Rather let us atone by reading, hearing, and absorbing the iridescence of her poems."

According to Stone, "Nature makes all kinds of little mistakes; I think we're in trouble because we can't control the violence...Actually, I think our species has lost the game. We're at a dead end. We certainly are not attempting to be a long-lived species in the world's history. It seems to me, we're attempting to make a big splash and dash right out."

The Wells College Visiting Writers Series is supported by grants from The New York State Council on the Arts, and the Virginia Kent Cummins Writers-in-Residence Fund.

Finch, Lacey, and VanNostrand debate at Wells

Wells College will host this season's major pre-election debate with 126th District state assembly candidates Gary Finch (Republican), Katie Lacey (Democrat), and Ron VanNostrand (Green Party) on Wednesday, October 27 at 8:45 p.m. in Cleveland Auditorium. This is a free event, and the public is encouraged to attend.

Sponsored by two student organizations, Wells College Democrats and Wells College Republicans, and the Wells Public Affairs major, the program will include introductions by the candidates, time for responses from each candidate to five questions authored by the students, and a segment to take questions from the audience.

"The purpose of our organizations is to get the campus politically involved," said Wells Republicans President Andrea Westerfeld, a senior from Arlington, Texas. "We believe people need to know about the issues. We are hosting this debate so they will have more knowledge before they vote."

Westerfeld and Wells College Democrats President Cindy Dubuque, a senior from East Haven, Conn., pooled the energy and resources of their two organizations. "Our philosophy is to get people educated and involved. We believe in our parties, but political action is important to both of us," said Dubuque.

Dubuque and Westerfeld said the Cayuga land claim, state-supported financial aid for students (specifically the Tuition Assistance Program), and the status of migrant farm workers in the area are issues they believe are of great interest to college students.
